In May 2003, Torino participated in a global competition organised by Icsid and Icograda, as these two organisations prepared to establish a new joint Secretariat for the International Design Alliance (IDA). Torino’s candidature was a significant testament to the city’s projects, research and experimentation – with its historical roots firmly linked to the industry of design.
As the competition unfolded, the IDA Committee proposed a unique opportunity to the City – to assist with the development of a competition that stemmed from the incredible success and interest received from the Host City project, and act as the pilot city for the project, thus accepting the first World Design Capital designation ever bestowed upon a municipality.
As the first city to hold this designation, Torino has been positioned as the pilot city for the project and, in close partnership with Icsid who leads this project on behalf of the IDA, will contribute to the development of the criteria upon which subsequent cities will be evaluated. In this role, Torino will serve as the critical reference from which key points of interests will be complied for other cities to benchmark.
