Sergio Chiamparino
Sergio Chiamparino has been Mayor of Torino since May 2001, having been a city councillor since 1993. He has been confirmed as Mayor in the 2006 administrative elections.

Born in 1948, he graduated in Political Sciences in 1973. He worked as a researcher at the University of Torino (1970-75) before beginning his political career in 1975 as party leader for the PCI on Moncalieri town council (Province of Torino). He headed the economics department of the Torino PCI, from 1982 to 1986 and was subsequently the economics consultant to the PCI group at the European Parliament (1986-88). Regional secretary of the Confederazione Generale Italiana del Lavoro Trade Union  (CGIL) from 1989 to 1991, Sergio Chiamparino then became provincial secretary of the Partito Democratico della Sinistra (PDS - Democratic Party of the Left) from 1991 to 1995. In 1996 he was elected as a PDS member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament, where he was a member of the permanent Budget Commission.
